Дед Мороз (Grandfather Frost) and Snegurotchka watch as Zoya offers her gift of dancing. |
Mainly Russian families, with a few adoptive families....Next year I want to "dress up". |
Nastia invited her friend, Conner to come. Well, now he knows how weird we are. |

Not weird as 4 of your kids are from Russia.
Looks like a good time was had by all.
Is there a large Russian population in your area?
Well, I'm sure to an outsider it seemed a bit odd! I don't know if you've been to a Yolka party at a school, but there is a program - ours not NEARLY as rehearsed or well-done as in that setting, but the whole Grandfather Frost story is acted out and so forth. And, the way we do it, the onlookers are "coerced" into being participants in games. It is fun but strange the first time.
I've been to a yolka at the girls' Russian nursery school. It was very "fake" with Father Frost and her niece. The two that I went to for the girls' school a year ago were very well done. Natalia's was very Russian as the first graders did not speak English. Katya's 3rd grade class was very Americanized as the kids have been studying English. They had Santa and no Father Frost.
